One of my favorite scriptures in the bible comes from Paul’s letter to the Galatians. In this letter, Paul describes the nine attributes of living a Christ-like life, also called the fruits of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.
Whether you consider yourself a religious person or not, most of us wish to possess these nine attributes that lead to a happy life. I love the study notes found in my Life Application Study Bible that correspond to Galatians 5:22-23:
Which of these qualities do you want the Spirit to produce in you?
This scripture has come up multiple times recently so after pondering this question I chose the word peace. Yes, I want peace in the world and all that “good” stuff but more than that, I desire to have a personal sense of peace that can’t be shaken by what is going on in the world around me. Peace as referred to in Galatians 5:22-23 is defined as a peace that is the result of resting in a relationship with God, not the absence of conflict.
I love doing word studies on scripture so I looked up the history of the word “peace” and learned it is derived from a Greek word, Eirene. Eirene refers to a state of national tranquility that is exempt from the rage and havoc of war. Or more clearly defined as it relates to peace as a fruit of the Spirit, a tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is…
A person that possesses peace in this context is not afraid of the “what ifs” in life because she trusts that God is in control of her life and everything in it. She does not allow people or circumstances to steal her joy but instead, rests in the knowledge and comfort that the creator of life has got her back.
My personal goal for 2016 is to reflect God’s peace more often in my life than not. Unfortunately, due to our imperfect human nature, it’s easy to allow our emotions to escalate as a result of something someone else said or did. I personally need some sort of physical reminder to help me keep my emotions in check and unscathed by the people and circumstances around me. That is the reason that I have a cross tattooed on my right wrist. No matter what I am doing, that cross is always visible and serves as a reminder of who I am and what I believe to be true.
Last week my husband and I were brainstorming about fundraising ideas for our upcoming globalX mission trip to Cambodia. Since I make my own custom jewelry for a hobby I decided to create a Fruits of the Spirit gemstone and leather bracelet. I made the first one a week ago and have worn it every day since. I have received many compliments on it so I hope it will appeal to you too and encourage you to make a donation of $50 or more to our globalX campaign. For all donations over $50 contributed to our donation page between March 8th and March 30th will receive one of my Fruits of the Spirit bracelets for free. Each gemstone was picked based on its history and folklore specific to each of the nine attributes described in Galatians 5:22-23.
Metaphysical properties, history and folklore of gemstones:
Rose quartz is believed to be a gemstone that offers healing to the heart chakra promoting peace, compassion, fidelity and love. According to Greek mythology, the blood of Aphrodite and Adonis was blended together after Aphrodite was cut by a thorn bush. Their blood stained a white quartz so that it appeared to be rose colored. As a result, rose quartz became a stone that was given as a gift of love in ancient Roman culture.
Agates are considered to be grounding gemstones that can enhance patience, joy and harmony. It is considered to be a stone that is partial to truthfulness therefore promoting integrity and overcoming negativity and bitterness of the heart.
Amethyst is a gemstone that is thought to have a positive effect on the mind by calming the emotions, reduce anger and promote patience and gentleness. It is also said to be a stone that brings clarity to the mind and strengthens self-discipline.
Moonstone is a gemstone that is said to reduce negativity while strengthening hope, faith and creativity. Ancient Romans thought moonstones were formed out of moonlight and thus they considered the stone to be one of love and sensitivity. Moonstone was said to be the stone of the goddess Diana (a/k/a Artemis) and also a gemstone associated with the ancient legend of Isis.
Tiger’s eye gemstones are said to promote patience, focus and determination. It is thought to restore harmony and cultivate joy in a person’s life.
Cat’s eye gemstones are grounding stones believed to promote protection, happiness and generosity. It is also said to enhance awareness, creativity, joy, kindness, peace and self-control.
