I am obsessed with face and body oils. I first began to use natural body oils and butters when I became pregnant with my first child in 1989. As my pregnant belly began to swell, I noticed changes in my skin. Fearful of getting stretchmarks, I adopted the daily routine of applying cocoa butter and sesame oil to my body throughout my entire pregnancy.
After my daughter, Madison’s birth, my post-pregnancy skin recovered without visible signs of trauma or stretchmarks. On the assumption that extra nourishment to the skin via daily use of natural carrier oils was the reason, I never abandoned this beauty routine. Two kids and 26 years later I am proud to report that I still do not have stretchmarks and my skin is surprisingly soft and radiant.
Body oils can be purchased at most mass market retailers and department stores. My favorite oils to use are carrier oils. Carrier oils are oils that are naturally derived from nuts and butters such as almond oil, avocado oil, sesame oil etc. It is important to note that best results and maximum absorption to the skin can only be achieved by using oils that are free of petroleum or mineral oil. The reason is that mineral oil and petroleum create a barrier on the surface of the skin. This type of barrier can be useful in certain situations such as to protect the skin from extreme winter weather conditions while snowboarding or skiing. However, on a day-to-day basis it is best to use natural carrier oils to ensure maximum nutrients are absorbed into the skin.
There are many lovely body oils on the market with some of my favorites being Omorovicza’s Firming Body Oil and Blissful Frankincense Oil. Unfortunately, both of these oils are rather expensive and a similar oil with higher grade carrier oils can be made at home for a fraction of the cost. Below is a body oil that I made at home yesterday and I must say, it is one of my best to date! Feel free to tweak the recipe to suit your individual style.
Instructions for Kelly’s DIY body oil:
Combine all carrier oils then add essential oils per the concentration chart below. Note that coconut oil must be melted before you can combine with liquid carrier oils. Store in a dark amber glass bottle or aluminum bottle with a lotion pump. Store in a cool dry place to extend shelf life as there are no artificial preservatives in this recipe. Coconut oil acts as a microbial however, adding a vitamin e capsule and grapeseed extract will also help preserve your DIY body recipes.
