glycolic acid anti-aging

Glycolic acid is considered a chemical exfoliant, meaning that it is non-abrasive or does not involve manual manipulation of the skin. Healthy skin regenerates every 28 days but as we age, that process slows down, allowing dead skin cells to build up on the surface of the skin.  Grainy scrubs and products such as the Clarisonic, can be too harsh and abrasive for fragile or aging skin.  This type of exfoliation is considered manual or physical exfoliation, in essence, we are in control of the level of exfoliation that is occurring on the skin leaving room for human error which can lead to damage of the skin.

It is for this reason that I prefer chemical exfoliation using fruit enzymes or hydroxy acids.  My favorite form of chemical exfoliation  is to use a glycolic product that has a ph level between 3 and 4.  This ph level is the exact level needed to provide healthy exfoliation of the skin. Using a product that is outside of this range is virtually useless as a natural exfoliator and will not provide maximum benefits to the skin. (ie, Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads has a ph of 4.7!)

Glycolic acid brightens skin by reducing discoloration and the appearance of fine lines to promote a more radiant and healthy glow.  My favorite glycolic acid product is from Therapy Systems, a boutique cosmetic company out of Nashville, Tennessee.  Therapy Systems offers 4 formulations of topical glycolic acid:

  • 10% Glycolic Acid Serum
  • 15% Glycolic Acid Serum (my fave!!)
  • 10% Glycolic Acid Cream
  • 15% Glycolic Acid Cream

Therapy Systems 15% Glycolic Acid Serum is my absolute favorite exfoliant
