Having a passion for beauty and extensive knowledge of botanicals, esthetician Leonor Greyl and her husband-to-be, Jean-Marie Grey created the Leonor Greyl brand in 1968.  The beauty veterans were the first to incorporate vitamins in shampoo and recognize the immense benefit of using natural oils to cleanse the scalp.  Nearly 50 years later, this family business has reached cult status with celebrities and is adored by beauty insiders all over the globe.

For the past two weeks I have been experimenting with several Leonor Greyl (pronounced: lay-oh-nor-grail) products.  In today’s post I want to discuss Huile de Leonor Greyl, a pre-shampoo oil treatment that I have used consistently over the last 12 days. (PR Samples were provided for this review)

Huile de Leonor Greyl

Although I have been using natural oils to pre-cleanse my face for more than ten years, the thought had never occurred to me to use one as a pre-shampoo treatment.  With firsthand knowledge of the age defying benefits natural oils have had on my skin, I was eager to give Huile de Leonor Greyl a try.

Application instructions offer two options:

  1. apply to dry hair, length and ends and evenly distribution with a natural bristle brush and leave on for 5-10 minutes and shampoo out, or
  2. same protocol as above and leave on overnight then shampoo

Each time I have used Huile de Leonor Greyl I have opted to leave the product in overnight.  In fact, on evenings that preceded a morning tennis match, I applied Huile de Leonor Greyl to dry hair then pulled it into a top knot and left it overnight.  The following morning before my match, I brushed through my hair with my beloved Mason Pearson brush then secured my top knot until showering that afternoon.

I can honestly say that the benefits were undeniable after a single use.  My color treated copper-red hair is highlighted twice per year and I am currently in the in between stage of the highlighting process.  Just three weeks ago after touching up my roots, I pointed out the obvious color transition to my husband stating that I needed to highlight again soon.  After using Huile de Leonor Greyl I seriously had to do a double take in the mirror.  My hair looked really pretty but at first I couldn’t put my finger on what exactly looked different.  After a few moments I realized that the older hair that had been highlighted blended evenly with the roots that had formerly stuck out like a sore thumb.  I came to the conclusion that the highlighted hair must have been dull due to lack of moisture and nutrients despite the fact that I use salon quality hair masks at least twice per month.

In addition to the color vibrancy that resulted from using the Huile de Leonor Greyl, my hair felt much softer which isn’t something that I normally try to achieve since my hair is extremely fine.  The softness was different than when I had used conditioning treatments in the past.  My past experience with soft hair went hand-in-hand with limp, flat hair.  My normal shampoo/styling routine is to section the hair during the drying process, dry each section using a round brush then wrap around Velcro rollers to dry.  Typically I have to follow that process with hot rollers or a styling wand, especially in the humid summer months here in Atlanta.  This was not the results I experienced with Huile de Leonor Greyl, my hair was soft, yet held a style that softly framed my face without my normal routine of using hot rollers or styling wands after drying my hair.

To date I have used Huile de Leonor Greyl at least 5 times and love not only the way it makes my hair look but also the fact that it smells absolutely AMAZING!  It’s also a great product to protect the hair from environmental elements such as sun exposure as it contains natural UVA/B sun protection filters.
