Relationship versus religion
When John the Baptist was in prison, he began to have doubts about Jesus being the true Messiah. If Jesus was who He said He was, why was John incarcerated instead of being free to spread the Gospel?? He had two choices here: 1) He could allow his doubt to escalate into fear or 2) he could respectfully ask Jesus to help him with his doubt.
Matthew 11:2-6 NLT John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen- the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.”
Being a believer isn’t about having faith in religion, it’s about having a relationship with Jesus. John trusted Jesus because he knew Him. He had a personal relationship with Jesus and had faith in His character. The reassurance John needed to quiet his doubts and fears was revealed in the works of Jesus, not just in His words.
Following Jesus doesn’t guarantee that life will be free of conflict or hardships. Quite the contrary, Jesus warns His disciples that they will face rejection, scorn, and persecution BECAUSE they choose to follow Jesus. When circumstances don’t look the way we think they should look, we would be wise to follow John’s example.
Instead of allowing doubt to overshadow our faith and turn us away from Christ, talk to Him through prayer. Lean further into Him and His Word. The Lord welcomes our sincere questions as long as we revere Him in the asking.
Sending love, peace and happiness to all!
