Happy Sunday, everyone!  I hope you enjoyed my post introducing you to the orphans of Phnom Penh, New Life Missions and their lead pastor, Rev. Vek Huong.  If you didn’t have a chance to read it please take a moment to read before moving forward with this post, link: First post about our mission trip to Cambodia

On Sunday, our first full day in Cambodia we began our day by attending services at New Life Church in Phnom Penh, where Pastor Vek is the lead pastor.  Not only were we warmly welcomed, we were provided headsets where we could have the sermon translated to us in English.  The experience was far more personal that I could have ever imagined.  Although we were in a foreign country where people spoke a different language, we were also in a country where 95% of the population embraces Buddhism as their religion of choice.  With less than 1% of the Cambodian population choosing to acknowledge and serve Jesus Christ as their personal savior, we were greeted with opening music that included contemporary Christian songs that we sing at our home church, North Point Community Church in Alpharetta.

What followed next opened our hearts to receive and embrace the children that many of us would be meeting for the first time later that afternoon.  The New Life team surprised us by bringing all of the children to church that morning where they sweetly serenaded us through worship music in their native tongue of Khmer.  Although we couldn’t understand the words these beautiful children were singing, we were touched and moved beyond measure.

After lunch we were bused to the orphanage where we were introduced to all of the children and spent the afternoon getting to know one another.  We also took this time to introduce our curriculum subject to the children, “Same, same but different”.  Through daily lessons and activities our goal was to impress upon the children the fact that although we may be different with respect to our physical and earthly nature, we are one in the same when we chose to follow Jesus.  Through his sacrifice, he gave all of us the gift of forgiveness, joined us together as one family serving our Heavenly Father.

Our team chose to introduce the topic by using a DISC personality test that allowed each of the kids to be grouped into teams according to their results.  This was fun for all of us, especially us “yellows” that love to be the life of the party…YELLOW, YELLOW, YELLOW!!!

Later that afternoon we began our tie-dying activity where we supplied the children with white t-shirts that had the word, “Different” printed on the front.  It was so much fun to watch the children as they called upon their unique artistic abilities to decorate their shirts.  It was even more fun to watch their excitement build as they surveyed the final project as the shirts dried on a makeshift clothes line outside our activity room.  More importantly, the gratitude and pride that radiated from the faces of these 71 children was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever observed.

One of the most fun moments during our youth camp was beginning our mornings with praise and worship time with the kids.  One of our team members boldly volunteered to lead this activity each morning and I can’t wait to share the photos and videos that reflect the amazing experience this was for all of us!! I hope you will revisit my blog next Sunday for details including photos and video clips.

Sending peace, love and happiness to all!
