serving God as a makeup artist

How can we use our gifts to help others?

Although I am passionate about my work and desire to help others see and enhance their natural beauty with cosmetics, it is a challenge to resume normal daily activities upon our return from Cambodia.

This year was the second year in a row that my husband and I served on a globalX team with a mission to host a youth camp for more than 70 orphans from New Life Missions (N.L.M) Cambodian orphanages. N.L.M funds and supports three orphanages located in Banteay Meanchey, Battambang and Phnom Penh and is led by Rev. Vek Huong and his wife, Samoeun

Summer 2016 globalX Cambodia mission trip

Does serving yourself bring the most happiness to your life or is it obtained by serving others

Our globalX team of 17 spent 5 days with children that have very little monetarily speaking, especially when measured against the standards of excess that we are accustomed to in the United States.  Last year was my first experience with the kids of N.L.M. orphanages. I embarked on the initial trip with the notion that our team’s assignment would be to lift up “poor little orphans” and teach them about God and his love for us. I could never have imagined the impact these kids would have on my life, on all of our lives. Nor would I ever have imagined that I, as well as my team mates, would be the greater receivers at the end of our mission trip.

The trip this year was no different except for the fact that the love and compassion that these kids have for each other and for God had grown and become more inspiring and contagious than before. When I look at what determines success and happiness here at home and compare it to what I experience when I am in the presence of these kids, I realize how poor we really are as a society. I realize how our values and goals are skewed in such a way that obtaining them will never lead to true happiness and a contented heart. Instead, they fuel our insecurities and create the need for greater success, greater acceptance and accumulation of “worthless” things that will never fulfill our ultimate desire for rich relationships and heart-felt connections with others.

Once again, I find myself not only struggling with a serious case of jet lag but also a lack of vigor. Difficulty and inability to see real value or feel excitement for some of the “things” I longed for prior to experiencing the love and light of N.L.M. children. Although my intent comes from the heart, I see zero value or fulfillment in writing about the latest trends in beauty or explaining “how to contour your face so that you look like Kim Kardashian” or any other celebrity or public figure that we so desperately want to look like.

Due to the discontentment stirring in my heart, I have been awake since 4:30 this morning.  Racking my brain, trying to discover a way to live an authentic life not just personally, but also professionally.  I keep asking myself these questions:

  • How can I utilize my God-given gifts and talents as a makeup artist and blogger to inspire authentic beauty?
  • How can I use my career to teach others the importance of cultivating a beautiful heart and mind?
  • How can I help others understand that no amount of external beauty or social and economic standing can bring true happiness to their lives?

It has been through a process of trial and error, mostly error if I am honest, that I finally learned this truth:

True happiness comes not from serving myself, but serving others.

There is no greater gift in life than to experience the gratitude and heart-felt reward that comes from bringing joy to the lives of others.  My purpose and hope behind this blog post is that at least one person will read these words and be inspired to show generosity, kindness and compassion to someone today.  As Andy Stanley puts it, “Do for one what you wish you could do for all.”

Think about it, what would the impact be if each of us set out to lift up just one person who crossed our path today? I’m just guessing but am inclined to believe that each and every one of us would experience the most rewarding, fulfilling and satisfying day in history!!  What are you waiting for, go make someone’s day today…

Sending peace, love & happiness to all!
